5 Tips - Does Your Toddler Not Want to Be Potty Trained? PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Gavin Thorn

If you are like me you will get incredibly frustrated by a toddler that shows no interest in getting potty trained.

Sure it maybe that all goes well at the beginning and the bribes and treats work out OK but then you hit a snag, no more interest and embarrassing accidents just where you don't need them.

So we worked through the issue(s) and came up with, which for us anyhow, was a winning formula to conquering potty training. Please note we could not put them in any order of importance as we have found at different stages or even different days a tactic worked better that others, so you will fine your own groove.

1) Star Chart - create a simple chart with your toddler, and believe me it does not have to be anything special, that allows her/him great pride in using the potty

2) Collected Stars - when your toddler gets 10 stars then a reward is due. Previously agree with her/him what it will be. We found anything from watching a favorite TV programme to a favorite cookie.

3) Praise - and loads of it. Especially toddlers get great self-satisfaction when they please you.

4) Multiple Potty's - have as many potty's in the house as you can without coming across as obsessed. It will really give your toddler great ease and comfort knowing there is always one around

5) Fun - toddlers pick up on stress, they can smell it - so always make it light heated and enjoyable.

And always, always remember they will be able to get potty trained and they all learn at different ages, so don't get hung on one of their friend's getting it before your toddler does, really don't sweat it, big breathe and onwards.

Also I have found that all three children took to it at different ages and there is absolutely no hard and fast rule on age whether a boy or a girl. Gavin Thorn
