Baby Care - Maintaining a Strict Baby Schedule PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Joe Britton

One of the most important items in Baby Care for your newborn or toddler is to implement a rigid baby care schedule for your newborn or toddler. While there are times when it is nearly impossible to stick to that schedule, keeping consistent is key to the overall happiness of you and your baby. An example feeding schedule for your baby when they are around 0-3 months could be as follow:

Feeding Times Range:

  • 5-6am
  • 9-10am
  • 12-1pm
  • 3pm
  • 6-7pm
  • 10-11pm

Implementing a late night feeding when you wake up your baby can help your baby sleep longer through the night. If the late night feeding is not existent, your baby may end up waking up around 1pm and then 4pm, which can be difficult on parents.

When it comes to scheduling, try to feed your baby in the ranges above and remember that naptime happens roughly 1 and half to 2 hours after a feeding. If you keep your baby to this similar schedule each and every day, your baby will be well rested and well fed, and the remaining hours that your baby is awake, the baby should be less fussy and more pleasurable to be around. However, if you change your feeding times each day and just feed the baby whenever the baby is hungry, it is more likely that the lack of structure will cause more fussiness including times when the baby is hungry or over-tired. If the schedule is persistent, it is much easier to veer off schedule and get right back on course. If no schedule is existent, than it is a more difficult process. The reasons we mention a stricter schedule is because babies pick up on routines very quickly and they need structure in their life as they aren't able to figure it out themselves, that's what us parents are for.Joe Britton
